Why Should I Control My Blood Pressure?

Statins are a class of medication that lower LDL cholesterol.  They are commonly prescribes for patients who are at high risk of cardiovascular events including heart attack and stroke.

There is good evidence that the reduction in LDL cholesterol reduces the risk of vascular events.

LDL reduction is one of the most important modifiable cardiovascular risk factors, and should not be treated in isolation but with due attention to:

  • Smoking cessation
  • Blood pressure control
  • Diabetic control

The use of a statin should not replace lifestyle modification including a healthy diet and exercise.
