Why Should I Control My Diabetes?

Diabetic medications are a class of medication that aim to control the blood sugar evels.  They are commonly prescribed for patients who have diabetes and are at high risk of cardiovascular events including heart attack and stroke.

There is good evidence that control of blood sugar reduces the risk of vascular events.

Diabetic control is one of the most important modifiable cardiovascular risk factors, and should not be treated in isolation but with due attention to:

  • Smoking cessation
  • Cholesterol control
  • Blood pressure control

Diabetic medications should not replace lifestyle modification including a healthy diet and exercise.

Current diabetes recommendations from the Australian Heart Foundation can be found here.
