What is the MitraClip Procedure?

There is good evidence that the reduction in LDL cholesterol reduces the risk of vascular events.

LDL reduction is one of the most important modifiable cardiovascular risk factors, and should not be treated in isolation but with due attention to:

  • Smoking cessation
  • Blood pressure control
  • Diabetic control

Statins are a class of medication that lower LDL cholesterol.  They are commonly prescribed for patients who are at high risk of cardiovascular events including heart attack and stroke.  Other medications include Ezetimibe, which is often used in combination with a statin.

A new class of injectable medication, the PCSK-9 Inhibitors are available on the PBS under certain restrictions.

The use of medications should not replace lifestyle modification including a healthy diet and exercise.

Current dietary recommendations from the Australian Heart Foundation can be found here.
